Spread the love

Everyone in this day and age wants to have a digital presence and although social profiles and blogs maybe adequate to satisfy personal needs, a business definitely needs a website. Without their own websites, businesses do not have as much credibility and exposure which their competitors with websites might have. Many freelancers and other people who want to share their ideas also have their personal websites.

While starting the website may sound tedious and complicated, it is actually not so. We will now see what you need to get your personal/business website up and running in a step-by-step process.

Before we start, let me tell you that the entire process can either be done by you or a web developer. You may also want to take care of a few steps by yourself and offload the rest to the web developer. You need to be the judge of this after determining your skill level to handle each of these steps.

  1. Register your Domain name
  2. Buy a hosting plan
  3. Pointing the Domain name to your Hosting plan
  4. Prepare the content
  5. Build the website
  6. Useful Tips and Information

1. Register your Domain Name

This is the first step that you need to take. You need to come up with a name which reflects the ideology of your vision or the essence of your business/product.

There are different types of domains, for eg: .com, .in, .org, .edu and many many more. We will not get into details about these. However you are free to leave comments or contact me in case you have any specific questions.

This might take one or more trials as most of the common and obvious names might be already registered by someone else. You can check the availability from multiple Domain registrars. Some of the most common names are Namecheap, Bluehost, Godaddy, Hostgator etc. You can also follow this link to VodkaDiary’s reseller site to check it out. In case you find some domain name that is available, you may also contact them to avail discounts while buying.

2. Buy a hosting plan

After you have successfully registered the domain name of your choice, the next step is to buy a hosting plan. This is the place where your websites will be stored/hosted. These will be available in multiple pricing plans. You need to judge the size and complexity of your website and determine the plan needed. Unfortunately there is not specific thumb rule that I can mention here for the basis of these choices as most of the web hosting companies offer different types of plans. I would however be more than happy to guide you in case you have any specific requirements.

Some of the most famous web hosting companies are Bluehost, Hostgator, Godaddy, Siteground etc. You can also follow this link to VodkaDiary’s reseller site to check it out. In case you find some domain name that is available, you may also contact them to avail discounts while buying.

3. Pointing the Domain name to your Hosting plan

Now that we have got both the Domain name and the Hosting plan, we need to make that the domain name points to the hosting plan. It essentially means that we need to make sure, that when someone types in the domain name in their browser, they are redirected to the website that will be placed in your hosting space.

The process to do this is a little bit different from company to company, although it is very easy and just some small steps are needed to be taken. As I am trying to make this guide for beginners, I will not be going into the technical details. You may contact the helpdesk of these companies and they will guide you how to do it. Normally this should not take more than 5 minutes to perform. However, it might need up to 48 hours to actually come into effect.

4. Prepare the Content

Now that we have got everything ready, we need to focus on the content of the website. We need to think and decide what and how much information is required for your intended audience. This is not a technical step but it is an extremely important step nevertheless.

This step will ultimately decide the entire design and structure of your website in the next step. Here, we need to carefully consider how the intended audience/customers should perceive each page. You may work on this by yourself or hire a content writer for this. You can find multiple content writers in different freelancing websites like Freelancer, PPH, Guru, Airtasker etc. or you can let me know in case you need any specific recommendations and I would be more than happy to direct you to some experienced and affordable content writers.

5. Build the website

This is now the final step that is needed to get your website up and running. Now, the website can be built by you using multiple website builder tools or by hiring website developers. My recommendation is to go with a web developer unless you are well aware of how to create websites and have at least some basic knowledge of html and CSS. There are site builder tools which you can use without any of these skills but they will mostly restrict you to use their design templates and you will not be able to create a unique look for your site.

Also, another very important thing is the complexity. For example, if you are going to incorporate online payment in your website, you need to keep in mind different security aspects even after the design is created. It would be better to leave it to a more experienced hand when it comes to the security of your business.

You can contact VodkaDiary’s website builder team here to help you out with this.

The steps mentioned above will get your business/products and ideas uploaded to the great wide world of the internet. However, we need to keep the following things in our mind in order to avoid issues later. I will not be elaborating too much on each, hence I would be more than happy to answer any specific questions in the comments section.
